Cornerstone Art Show June 7 at Joliet Museum
An exhibition of paintings, photographs, woven items, and other crafts gives visitors a chance to experience the creative side of artists with disabilities. The fourth annual Cornerstone Art Show returns for one night only at the Joliet Historical Museum, 204 N. Ottawa St. in Joliet on Thurs., June 7 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited and there is no admission fee.

"We've had another amazing year at Cornerstone and there is a great deal of talent to showcase among the individuals who receive services at the agency," said Ben Stortz, President and CEO of Cornerstone Services, the disability services organization hosting the art show. "We are very proud of their creative accomplishments and can't wait to let the public take a look!"

Each year the art show sees many new visitors, but also many returning guests who want to see the latest works from their favorite artists. Past years have drawn community leaders like Congressman Bill Foster, Representative Natalie Manley, and Mayor Bob O'Dekirk--all of them leaving the event with a newly-purchased work of art under their arms. The bulk of the artwork is created in Cornerstone's Lotus Art Studio, where individuals enrolled in Cornerstone programs have more time and space to work on their creations. At the studio Cornerstone staff members see participants express themselves in creative ways previously unimaginable. Other Cornerstone artists find that sketching, drawing, or painting helps reduce anxiety.

"People will be amazed when they step into the museum and see what we have on display," said Cornerstone Director of Community Services Ann Ojo, whose department organizes the event. "We have some very talented people in our programs making very sophisticated works of art."

In addition to the visual arts, the art show will also feature craft items like baskets, purses, jewelry, and decorated gourds. Most of the pieces will be available for purchase that evening. A majority of the proceeds from each sale will go directly to the artist. The remainder will be used by Cornerstone to furnish more art supplies.

Cornerstone Services is a not-for-profit agency founded in 1969 that helps people with disabilities live and work in the community. Cornerstone is a member agency of the United Way of Will County.
